Building Construction Management at Purdue University

Automatic Identification and Data Collection Research

The Building Construction Management (BCM) department at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, has been working with graduate student Kyle J. Majchrowski on research in the area of Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) applications for the construction industry. With computer technology breaking into the construction industry with a strong force, AIDC applications are already beginning to appear. Students are using AIDC applications within the construction curriculum on a daily basis with assistance from Associate Professor Duane Dunlap, Associate Professor Dale Koehler, Lab Instructor Jerry Brown, and Graduate Teaching Assistant Kyle Majchrowski.

History

BCM and AIDC

Three years ago, a grant from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) made possible the beginnings of this project. Initializing with ToolWatch, this project slowly began to take shape. ToolWatch was used in the Surveying laboratory to track field personnel and equipment. After complications with its use, the program was transferred to a different course (see below) and a new, wireless application took its place.

After studying the best way to integrate AIDC systems into the curriculum, the BCM department has moved forward. By maximizing student involvement while minimizing actual time spent working with the systems, students are able to use these systems as extensive learning tools. The hands-on approach gives students the exact experience with these systems that they can expect on a construction site.

Current Projects

Wireless Tool Management

1) The wireless tool tracking and management application that is used in the surveying classes has been in place since March of 1998. With over 150 end-users of the program every week, the system was designed to be user friendly without complications. Students use the Symbol 3840 Laser Radio Terminal to perform all the necessary bar code scanning. Each student has an ID badge and each piece of equipment has a bar code associated with it. The entire check-in and check-out procedure is done only with the handheld unit. No interaction with a computer is necessary. The information is entered into a database that can be accessed by users to view information such as maintenance history, employee information, and equipment conditions. There are repair and cost tracking sections within this database. Since the database was created in Microsoft Access, easy to use interactive screens are available so minimal training is required.

ToolWatch

2) Students play the role of supervisors in the construction lab shown below. Within this lab students take part in constructing a wood frame house, a steel structure, masonry foundations, and concrete beams and columns. During these activities a variety of tools and equipment are used to complete the tasks. Since the crew size is relatively small, the selected means of tracking tools and equipment is ToolWatch. ToolWatch allows the training of the students in its basic functions and allows them to perform simple tool transfers. Because of the complexity of the ToolWatch program, extensive end-user training is required which is beyond the time constraints of each class.

Data Logger Applications

3) Data Logger Gold has been the premier application development tool for all AIDC systems running on the Symbol Spectrum 24 wireless network. Donated by General Data Corporation, the program is running on a designated computer within the construction lab and stores all collected data within the School of Technology network. Students are able to retrieve the information in various forms while in and out of class. This information is useful to courses such as Site Control, Labor Productivity, and Supervision. With Data Logger, the systems run independent of the collected data so access time on both the DCTs and workstations is maximized.

Future Research

With the continuing efforts of graduate student Kyle Majchrowski and Associate Professor Dale Koehler, much is in store for the near future. Applications for material tracking and handling, labor tracking, and equipment scheduling are under development using the Symbol equipment shown above and the Spectrum 24 Radio Frequency wireless network already established in the laboratories. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is available for a variety of applications. Cost analysis, material and job site analysis, and construction job site testing at Purdue University with assisting companies are all possibilities. Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is underway to eliminate the paper trail associated with production reports and safety checklists.

Graduate Teaching Assistant Kyle J. Majchrowski

Kyle is a graduate student in Industrial Technology with a focus on AIDC applications, systems, and technology in the construction industry. Graduating in May of 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction Management, Kyle saw need and direct application of this technology in construction. With an extensive computer background as well as management work experience, Kyle’s continuing education in the field of AIDC and research in the BCM department will benefit the construction industry as a whole.

Supporting Purdue

With generous donations from various companies, this project is blazing new roads into construction. Equipment for these activities varies in price. Badge printers, scanners, computers, and bar codes have to be purchased for this research to continue. If you are interested in contributing to this research project, please contact Kyle Majchrowski at kmajchro@hotmail.com.

Contacting the BCM department
